Short Term Shelters:

Shelter for homeless youth 16-22. Education, case management, drop-in medical clinic, job readiness program, gardening programs, daycare/nursery, food and clothing in structured environment, Rites of Passage program.  Services on an individual basis but will occasionally take adults on a case-by-case basis. Couples accepted, but housing is in separate facilities. 

Free to stay; sliding scale, Medicaid, Medicare, insurance accepted for health clinic (fees required for labs & tests); Call for info or walk-in.

Long term transitional housing for single women, children, transgender and gender non-conforming folks who are 18 or older, and women with children who are not using drugs, and not suffering from any serious mental illnesses. Programs include art & yoga, community gardening, and a working residents’ savings program. Call to set up an intake appointment. A waitlist is typical; preference to those with additional barriers (transgender, not English-speaking, etc.).

24-hour intakes for individuals 18 years old or older. All genders. Accepts pets and provides storage locker. Guests can go in and out at any time. Meals for those staying overnight. Communal setting.

Transitional housing for homeless single women, including transgender women, 18 and older who have children under 18, pregnant women, and “intact” and single father-led families. Programs for residents include case management, parenting classes, employment program.

Emergency shelter for men and women. No children. Priority for long term stays for those in self-help recovery program. Short term stays: Arrive between 8 & 4 to fill out intake form, check-in starts at 4:45. Must leave in morning by 6 AM. Clothing available, 2 meals served daily. Legal counsel, supportive housing, medical services, counseling services, and employment skills resources also available.

Emergency shelter for men (without children), women, and women with children for 30-90 days. First 7 nights free, $10 thereafter, or voucher. Breakfast and dinner provided. Emergency shelter & case management for women with children for up to 3 months with referral from overnight shelter. Must have state ID, COVID test and current TB test.

Prevention in the form of rent/deposit assistance for families with very low income (with children) living in Orleans Parish. Clients cannot be pregnant, cannot be living in public housing, and cannot be receiving Section 8 vouchers. Case management for families with children, can help homeless parties due to eviction or other form of crisis; Intake Procedure: everything is managed by phone due to COVID. No longer offers temporary shelter.

Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO)

HANO runs public housing, including River Garden, Harmony Oaks, and Columbia Parc. They manage the waitlist for Section 8 vouchers for rental assistance, as well as listings of project-based vouchers throughout New Orleans.  

Tenants in Project-Based units pay 30% of their income for rent and utilities. There are closed waitlists for Section 8; "pre-applications" for waitlists are available on HANO's website.
